I have never mowed a lawn in my life. I can tell you when to 'lime' your lawn, aerate, and seed, but a turf specialist, I am not. And while 'lawns' are made up of all kinds of interesting grass combinations, about this I do not care.
My passion is plants....
groundcovers, shrubs, deciduous trees, conifers, broadleaf evergreens, Japanese Maples, perennials, and annuals.... of that I know a bit. And while, I know a good deal, I rejoice in coming across a plant that I do not know -one of which I am not familiar. If it is for sale, I will often purchase the plant, whether or not there is a space in my yard or not. As a designer, I should know better, but honestly, I just can't help myself....because I am a collector. I know that if a plant can live in my modestly-sized yard with a moose and a beagle (read one large dog and one small), my two kids, no fertilizer, without being dug-up for the winter, mulch perhaps once a year, and pretty much just water alone, it is one I will probably be willing to recommend.
Flaking bark, colored stems, indumentum, witch's brooms, seeds, habit, variegation, scents, pollination and, of course, design, are all interesting to me. I am especially fond of Japanese Maples and have collected over 60 varieties, but I would still not consider myself an expert in this field.
I will never stop learning. I will never know it all. And to me, this is the best part.
As I share the bit of knowledge that I have attained, feel free to share in my joy. I would love to hear about your finds.
Until next time, Plant Lovers Unite!
